Elitist Marriage

So, apparently another elitist upper-middle-class thing that we do is get married, according to this Washington Post article.

This stand-out statistic caught my eye:

...about a third of first births among white women coming before marriage, compared with three-quarters among black women.

Restaurant Week - Copia

We're not going to be hitting restaurants every day this week, as we have during past RWs, but while A. seems content to sleep in her carseat we figured we might as well check out some more restaurants.

Last night we went to Copia with [livejournal.com profile] heliopsis. Read more... )

Adjectives Banned

For those of you who don't read [livejournal.com profile] languagelog, I just had to point out a recent entry, in which the following was related by one of their correspondents:

I was in the Children's Museum in Baltimore when I overheard this conversation between a mother and a young son, concerning a bizarre "fun house" installation, which had sloping ceilings, "wrong" furniture, odd colors, and all sorts of other things meant to delight children with its absurdity:

SON: I want to go in that silly house again!

MOTHER: Don't you remember? We do NOT use ADJECTIVES!

SON: Sorry, mommy!

The entry goes on to point out that what the mother is presumably trying to teach her kid is not to use judgmental language. But that's equally ludicrous. WTF, mom?!

Touch-ups

[livejournal.com profile] officialgaiman pointed out this photo touch-up software site. It reminds me of the Dove ad and has some of the same sense of sick fascination for me. I found I was more bothered by some than by others. This made me curious--if someone you met online were using this software, at what point would you feel they had crossed the line from putting their best self forward to engaging in deception?
