The 2009 Summer One-Acts Production Team seeks directors for plays by West Coast playwright Barbara (“Babs”) Lindsay, whose works include “My Boyfriend’s Wife,” which T@F performed in 2005; local playwright Christopher Lockheardt, writer of “Your Kiss is on my List” from our festival in 2006; and T@F’s own Mare Freed, who has written an original comedy.

We will be performing a collection of 7 plays from these writers.

We have a core group of five (5) scripts:
Canyon’s Edge – Babs Lindsay
Cupid’s Beau – Babs Lindsay
Not Funny – Chris Lockheardt
Helluva Poker Face – Chris Lockheardt
Dan in the Lion’s Den – Mare Freed

We are seeking vision statements for Canyon’s Edge, Cupid’s Beau, Not Funny and Helluva Poker Face, specifically. Mare Freed will be directing her own play.

There are four (4) additional scripts open for consideration:
An Actual Baby Person – Babs Lindsay
The Usual – Babs Lindsay
Season’s Greetings – Chris Lockheardt
Breakfast with Warhol – Chris Lockheardt

Potential directors should feel free to submit vision statements for these plays, as well, with the understanding that only 2 of them be chosen for the final lineup.

To submit your interest in directing, please contact Renee Johnson, the Festival Director, for a PDF of all scripts. Choose one or more of the scripts that you wish to direct, and email a “vision statement” for each piece to Renee by the end of the day on Saturday, February 28th.

Vision statements should address the questions listed below, and will be evaluated by the Festival Director, Producer, and Technical Director on the basis of individual strength, artistic merit, and confluence with other directors’ statements and styles.

The theme which has emerged, this year, is romantic relationships. Many of the plays deal with couples (of all kinds). There are exceptions to this rule, though, and we’d love to see what kind of ways the other plays could be worked into this theme or how the theme will change as directors add their own spin to their visions. All of the plays discuss issues such as self-perception and perception of others, communication, trust and even mortality.

This year’s set of plays offer opportunities for both comedy and drama, and will present a cohesive group of distinctly modern and often darkly humorous theatre. Think Jeanine Garafolo guest-starring on The State or the cast of Saturday Night Live performing Chekhov. 

Vision Statement Questions:
1. Why do you want to direct this play?
2. How do you anticipate bringing this piece to life? (Please remember that we have a limited budget and wish to minimize the technical requirements for this production.)
3. How will/does this play relate to the other scripts/larger themes of the core collection?
4. What experience do you bring to your role as a director and directing team member?
5. Is there anything else you feel we should know in evaluating your application?

Vision statements should be limited to one or two pages; how you address the questions above (individually or as part of a continuous narrative) is entirely up to you. Please try to be as clear as possible in your descriptions. The Festival Director may contact you if there are questions about your ideas.

You are welcome to submit illustrations or design documents if you think they will help in communicating your vision(s), but this is not required.

You may submit vision statements for multiple scripts, but you may only direct one play during this production. If you have a strong preference for one play over others, it is up to you to communicate this to us. Submitting a vision statement for a particular script indicates your inherent willingness to direct it.

Disclaimer for Directors:

In submitting a vision statement, you are making a commitment to follow through, should your vision statement be accepted. Please be confident that you are available, willing and able to direct your chosen play. Make sure that you will be able to commit to the schedule/dates, below, before submitting.
