(Not everyone who gets hit by a bus is killed, of course, and these numbers leave out all accidents involving municipal bus lines.)

Having nearly been nearly schmeered to smithereens (but, in fact, not, as many have noticed since) by a municipal bus, I find this omission to be significant.

Indeed. It struck me, as I read this, that most people come closer to being hit by a municipal bus than any other kind, they being much more ubiquitous.
