At Home in London (and Basingstoke)

It was a fairly quiet week. Having not cooked much the week before, I was
feeling remiss and made up for it with tuna casserole, pan fried duck
breasts, sausage & potato bake and a rabbit sauce over pasta.
Our big adventure was going down to Basingstoke on Saturday for the UK
National Figure Skating and Ice Dancing Championships. We took the train
from Waterloo in under an hour, grabbed lunch at the McDonald's in the mall
across from the station, and took a cab out to the ice rink. It was a
fairly small place--fewer seats than the Harvard Arena, for those who've
been there--and the whole event was fairly low-key. We saw the junior men
and senior ladies, dance, pair (yes, one pair) and men. Not a lot of great
skating, but it was fun to see. When asked to compare it to US Nationals
(which I attended with my family in 1995) I really couldn't--it seemed more
on par with a US regional competition. I've written a fuller description of
the skating for those of you who are interested, and put it in the next post.
We had hoped to get our Christmas tree up on Sunday, having picked it up
during a walk on Friday afternoon, but were unable to find the tree stand we
got last year. It's a mystery, since there aren't a lot of places it could
be in this flat and we had no trouble finding the decorations. So instead
we both worked on various computer tasks and watched TV over Chinese
take-away in the evening.
JR arrives from Colorado this week, so I need to hustle and get the house
cleaned.
