At Home in London
Nov. 19th, 2001 11:20 pmIt was a pretty quiet weekend, really. Jason's former housemate, Seth, had
come through on Monday before heading off to Barcelona to meet with some
people doing interesting work there. He returned on Friday night. On
Saturday he and Jason went off to the Tate Modern and I met back up with
them in Leicester Square.
A friend had gotten us tickets to the UK premiere of Monsters Inc., part of
the London Film Festival. There was a pre-screening party, but it was at
McDonald's, so we didn't have much hope of glitterati. We stopped in
briefly and snagged some free fries before wandering down the street to
Fortnum & Mason--their food hall is always a good place to kill fifteen
minutes. Back in Leicester Square we found Barbara and saw the movie. It
was lots of fun and the animation was amazing. It won't actually open here
for a few months, so it was great to be able to catch it while our friends
Stateside are still enthused about it. After the show we walked up to Y
Ming for an excellent Chinese meal--we tried a different main of shredded
duck with winter greens that was very good.
On Sunday I made French toast in the morning and Seth headed out to catch
his plane home. Jason and I spent most of the rest of the day catching up
with stuff, playing computer games and watching TV. I talked to Dave
Policar--mostly dissecting Buffy the Vampire Slayer's latest adventures--and
briefly to Linda Marie. Jason came with me to Sainsbury's to check out
their remodeling efforts and help carry. In the evening I tried one of
their recipes for chicken & prawns in a creamy mushroom sauce over white &
wild rice. It sounded good, but turned out fairly bland. I'd tried a
different experiment--tarragon chicken with chanterelles--earlier in the
week that was much more satisfying.
And that's about it. I feel like I haven't accomplished very much since we
got back from France, but that's wearing thin, so I think this week will
probably be a bit more productive. We're celebrating Thanksgiving by seeing
a matinée of The Merchant of Venice at the RSC and getting sandwiches from
the only shop in London I've found that uses rare roast beef, which happens
to be at the tube stop for the theatre.
