Somehow sexual assault has been a big theme this week.
In addition to the amazing article in the Cleveland Plain Dealer that you should read if you can possibly bring yourself to do it, there's also this article by the editor of the UConn paper, who was assaulted, fought off her attacker, and then was surrounded and attacked by another group of jeering men.
The Women's Murder Club, which I am still enjoying and encourage you to check out, was about rape this week. New Amsterdam dealt with this issue in March and had a great question: "What is it about women that scares men so much, they need to rape and kill to destroy it?"
And a friend (waves!) was sexually assaulted in her own kitchen by a guy who answered her craigslist ad for a sublettor. She and her roommate yelled him out of the house and called the cops. He's been arrested and she seems to be doing amazingly well with the whole thing.
As long as it's happening, it feels important to at least bear witness, to say as publicly as possible: this is not acceptable, do not do this. So I don't mind. But if next week's theme could be more cheerful, I wouldn't mind that, either.
