Hungry Monkey & Privilege
Feb. 25th, 2010 12:47 pmThis week I've been reading Hungry Monkey: A Food Loving Father's Quest to Raise an Adventurous Eater. I quite enjoyed it--Amster-Burton has an engaging tone and tosses in lots of funny moments and amusing quips, as well as recipes for the dishes he discusses. I recognize Alice in a lot of the stories about his daughter and am interested to try involving her more in my cooking.
Apart from all that, I was impressed by this simple passage:
...there are issues associated with being a female cook that I will never have to worry about. Men hardly ever feel like they're trapped in the kitchen turning out dinner for an ungrateful family, and they never worry about whether they will be considered bad feminists if they love to cook. I'm simultaneously grateful that I don't have to worry about these things and depressed that anyone has to.
