I have had some conversations of the sort Rauch describes, the ones with academic friends who would prefer to see marriage made into an institution with fewer privileges, as they see it. I am sympathetic to the feeling of exclusion, but I disagree that it isn't an important and stabilizing institution. Rauch does a good job of quantifying the reasons why. It's not just about privileges, though it can seem that way from the outside looking in. It's also about responsibilities and expectations. As I mentioned the other day on our walk, when Trowa and I got married, our daily lives didn't change; however, our expectations did (at least, mine did!), because now we have to plan not just our separate futures, but our shared future, in a way that will benefit us both the most, and the ramifications of failing to do so are greater.
