100 Recipes - #61 Steamed Mussels

I wanted to make something special for Father's Day and Jason likes mussels, so I decided to try this recipe. Instead of frites (which are traditional, but seem rather random to me) I made my standard rice pilaf with chopped spinach and poured the mussels and sauce over that, which worked very well. Dealing with the mussels was much quicker and easier than I'd ever imagined. While the Riesling we had open worked fine in the dish, it wasn't the best pairing for drinking with it. Alice refused to try a mussel, but had a great time tossing them in the bowl for us.

And for dessert we had Jason's favorite, strawberry shortcake, made with local berries. I even made the sacrifice of serving it over biscuits, instead of the cake I prefer. Alice helped me whip the cream and then did a happy little dance every time she popped a strawberry in her mouth.

I can tell Alice's personality is really shining through. She sounds soooo cute. My girls skip the happy dance and just go straight for gorging themselves on fresh local berries:)
