- I miss River Phoenix. When he died, twelve years ago, I didn't understand that I would still notice his absence so long afterwards. I can't help thinking that Leonardo DiCaprio would be unnecessary if River had lived.

- Beyonce's got some pipes there. After Vois a ton chemin I actually found myself clapping her performance. Of course, by the time she got to Believe I was pretty bored with her, but the changing eye-shadow provided some variation.

- Kate Winslet wins my personal fashion contest. Love that color.

- Oprah was another notable standout. And hey, Julia, love those twins!

- Where were the seat-fillers? There were empty seats all over the place, even down in the orchestra section. When Laura Linney did her stand-up spot in front of the mezzanine, the four seats immediately behind her were all empty. Seemed like an odd change in policy, especially since they decided to film back there.

- Overall I found this one of the most boring shows they've done in a while. While I chuckled along with Chris Rock, this morning I can't recall a single thing he said. And no really notable fashion fox-paws--where was the swan dress? the ballerina? Cher? When the worst sin is "too much product" in Laura Linney's hair, that's a pretty tame year.

- Trends: mermaid trains, pale skin, goth eyes.

I think there were lots of really bad dress choices this year, actually, not to mention lots of bad makeup (the "goth eyes," as you note, and way too much blush in many cases). The overabundance of mermaid dresses was especially notable for the fact that they were worn by a bunch of women who didn't have the figure to carry them off well. Zooey Deschanel was wearing some kind of op-art monstrosity, Gwyneth Paltrow had quadra-boobs, and I just hated Hilary Swank's dress.

I thought Kate Winslet, Helen Mirren, and Imelda Staunton had some of the prettiest dresses. However, Imelda's dress would have been better for her if it had been all full-length instead of tea-length in the front and train-length in back. The uneven hemline made her look very, very short, whereas a full-length hemline would have elongated her look.

poor cate blanchett was horribly betrayed by her makeup artist.

Yeah, but they were all "okay, who sold her on that one?" choices, not "has she taken leave of her senses?!" ones like we get some years. And Gwyneth's breasts are always a problem--before, because she didn't actually have any and now she's got baby-breasts and doesn't know how to deal, I'm guessing.

I completely agree about Imelda Staunton--she looked lovely sitting in the audience, but the red carpet photos are a fright.

Where were the seat-fillers?

i wondered the same thing.

as for dresses, i'm really not liking the "backless so far down you can pretty much see buttcrack" trend.

i mean, hilary swank's back is quite lovely, but really.

Hey, not that getting your hubby to come out wasn't awesome, but where were you? We missed you!

I just wasn't feeling social and I knew I'd be itching to channel surf and wishing people would shut up, so I stayed home and called [livejournal.com profile] bex77 when I felt the need to dish. That way I could catch hits of Stuart Townsend slinking around shirtless in Queen of the Damned during commercials without anyone laughing at me.
