The Dresden Dolls show at Axis started at midnight. During the final song Amanda was singing "I'm on fire!" and girl don't lie. This was the first time I'd actually made it to one of their gigs and I think I picked well.

After their very long and impressive set, we went over to a party. It's the kind of place that usually has hundreds of people and I have to remember my sunglasses, but this year they decided to keep it intimate, which meant that I actually knew most of the people there when I arrived. I rubbed someone's shoulders for a long time and that was a lot of fun. There was some trauma in another area of the party and some people were being told to leave and it was gratifying to have three different hosts come through to where we were hanging and say "Not you. You don't have to leave. You are welcome here, carry on." But at last, our gang were the only ones left and it was time for us to make our way home, even though the sun was not yet up.

Happy New Year, everyone, and may 2004 be a year of positive change.

Any years felt like a negative change, i.e. a year that would make you better off materially, emotionally, and mentally if it had not happened? I'm really not sure I could come up with one in the recent past. Sure, there are difficult years, but those have often been the most valuable for maturity.
