Theatre@First is pleased to announce auditions for our next mainstage show, Martin Sherman's Bent. Written in 1979 and nominated for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play, Bent is a powerfully tragic and deeply revealing examination of the treatment of gay men in 1930's Germany as the Nazi Party rises to power. Bent is the story of Max, a homosexual man living a hedonistic life as a con artist in Berlin. Forced to flee the city pursued by the Gestapo, Max finds love and redemption in the unlikeliest of places. Bent presents a number of challenging roles for actors and an incredible opportunity to explore raw emotions from sheer terror to overwhelming lust in a timeless play that has never been more topical.
Auditions for Bent will take place July 9 and 10 from 7-10pm at Unity Somerville, 6 William Street. Auditions will be by appointment only--actors may sign up for auditions on Theatre@First's website: http://www.theatreatfirst.org/shows/bent/auditions.shtml. Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script--no prepared monologues are required. Any actor interested in the role of Greta should be prepared to sing a cappella a brief song of their choice.
Performances will take place at Unity Somerville, September 14, 15, 16, 20, and 21 at 8pm, and close Saturday, September 22 with a 3pm matinee.
Notes:
Women and men are all invited and encouraged to audition for Bent. All the characters in the play will be presented as male. Bent features on-stage violence, sexual situations, and disturbing content.
