A few days in Sydney

So here we are in Sydney, the first stop on our two-month long independent tour of Australia and New Zealand. Photos are over on FB, but I thought I'd try to keep at least a list going over here.
Our travel was pretty smooth. We flew Boston to Toronto to Beijing to Sydney. 25 hours in the air and 40 hours elapsed time from walking out of our house to reaching our rental place on the other end.
We're staying in Darlinghurst, a neighborhood just on the eastern side of the Central Business District. The place is lovely, with lots of exposed stone and a somewhat chancy spiral staircase up to the bedrooms. I've been consistently walking up for an hour in the middle of the night and enjoying the very nice, private patio behind the house.
The weather has been delightful after the heatwave in Boston. Highs are right around 60F each day with only a brief sprinkle of rain as we strolled though the botanical garden.
We've done basically two things each day:
Saturday - 3 hour walking tour and a visit to the Royal Botanical Gardens
Sunday - Bridgeclimb of the Sydney Harbor Bridge and a trip on the Manly Ferry to watch the sunset out there
Monday - Early morning tour backstage at the Sydney Opera House and then a visit to the Sydney Fish Market and the Maritime Museum.
We haven't eaten very adventurously yet, but Alice has discovered that she likes Reubens and enjoyed broiled baby octopus at the market. Last night we had a very nice dinner at The Owl House, a hidden gem not far from our place. She's been a total joy to travel with so far. On our first night she lost one of the three teeth the dentist told her to expect and was very pleased that Ozzie, the Australian Tooth Fairy, came through with an encouraging note and a gold $1 AUD coin.
We got to have dinner out in Parramatta with a couple of family friends, which was lots of fun and included a stop at Winterlight, a winter themed carnival, for dessert.
We're finding public transportation easy to negotiate and very useful and affordable. There's a daily maximum of $15 and on Sundays that's reduced to just $2.60, so our trip to Manly and back (usually $15 each) was basically free.
Jetlag hasn't been too bad, but we've been crashing hard by about 9pm. I've had some wacky dreams--in one I was marrying someone who, in real life has decided they can't be friends with me; and in another I was recruited from the audience of Macbeth to wear a fuzzy green jumpsuit and become part of the Birnam Wood.
Today we're going to the Art Gallery of New South Wales and then out to walk along Bondi Beach. Tomorrow we fly to Tasmania.
Onward!
