"I know very little about some of the people on my friends list. Some people I know relatively well. I read your journals, or we have something else in common, and we chat occasionally. Some of you I hardly know at all. Perhaps you lurk, for whatever reason. But you friended me, and I thank you for your interest in my words.

But here's a thought: why not take this opportunity to tell me a little something about yourself. Any old thing at all. Just so the next time I see your name I can say: "Ah, there's so and so...they enjoy the savory aroma of monkey brains a la mode."

I'd love it if every single person who friended me would do this. Yes, even you people who I know really well. Then, if you like, post this in your own journal and see what gems of knowledge appear."

When I was three, my parents got my brother and me a cat. Mom decided to name it Telly, after the Telly monster on Sesame Street (and aw, Shelley and Telly--so cute). But after one day of the cat cowering under my old crib and swiping at us whenever we tried to pet him, my brother and I decided that "Oscar" would have been a better Muppet-inspired name. Telly stuck, though.

You lucked out. [livejournal.com profile] muffyjo's Mom named the cat "Brother" and when asked in kindergarten if she had any siblings, she insisted that she did. Her mom now has a dog named...you guessed it..."Sister."

Gah. It's so hard to remember what you don't know!

My favorite comfort-food flavor of ice-cream is B&J's Cherry Garcia. It's the only food that, when we buy it, it's mine mine mine mine, to the point where I don't bother scooping it into a bowl to have some, I go after it with a spoon because I know I'm not gonna share with guests.

I had a pet cat as a kid. I used to drape him around my neck and walk around with him like that. I was very excited to go to the circus and see that Gunther Gebel Williams did the same thing on a slightly different scale.

When I was eleven, I became obsessed with Star Trek (original series--this was 1985). I mean, seriously obsessed. Obsessed enough for my mom to take pity on me and lift the otherwise implacable no-TV-on-school-nights rule. There is a possibility that some of the fiction I wrote at the time was actually fan fiction. :)

In 1999 I bought a 1988 VW GTI. It had... troubles. After only 2 months of owning it the horn would honk every time I turned left. People stared; they were obviously offended that I was honking at them.
I was very embarrassed by the horn honking. As a coping mechanism, I drove with my window down and whenever the horn honked I would scream "You're so sexy!".

Good! I could tell that some people thought I was a freak, but others appeared genuinely pleased.

I do think it's a little odd that I was embarrassed by the honking, but not by my own screaming :)

I have slept with one stuffed animal or another for the majority of my life, regardless of other (human) bed companions. My current stuffed bedmate is a small polar bear, bought for me by my sweetie long before we were sweeties. I named mine Walter. I bought his twin to give to my sweetie-to-be that same year, and she named hers Lucas. Now that we're sweeties, Walter and Lucas have happily reunited.

Growing up, I really wanted to be an astronomer. Specifically, I wanted to be a cosmologist, studying the beginnings and evolution of the universe. I would read what I could on the subject and at night would work out on paper my own intricate theories until I drifted off to sleep. I helped found the first ever Panama Canal Astronomy Club in the '80s.

Then in high school I visited Mt. Laguna Observatory as part of a San Diego County honors student program. When I saw that real astronomers never look at the sky and spend all their time crunching numbers from printouts and doing all sorts of other analyses, it's as if someone had stuck a needle in my balloon of a dream and all the romance leaked out of it.

People often think that I planned a career in computers my whole life, but actually, when I started college, I had a very difficult time deciding between majoring in Computer Science or Music (with a concentration in composition). I wanted to be the next big "modern composer", a la Edgard Varese, Philip Glass, Steve Reich, Frank Zappa, etc. I took classes in both, and even considered a "make your own major" in electronic music. In the end, I decided that for every Philip Glass, there must be 1000 aspiring composers that nobody's ever heard--so I decided to go CmpSci (and a career in same). I don't think I really have any regrets, since music works well as a hobby, although sometimes I wish I had the training to write the Great American 21st-Century Symphony, even if nobody else ever heard it.

Well, I still noodle around on the guitar and bass and vocals a little bit, though fear of disturbing my wall/ceiling neighbors has kept me from practicing as much as I should. Other than that--quite a bit of listening. :-)

I wanted to be a veterinarian until I was 13. Then I dissected a frog and didn't want to be a veterinarian anymore. At that point, I absolutely had to know what I was going to be doing for the rest of my life. "Hey, I make up stories to myself," I reasoned, "I should be a writer." I wrote, among other things, three (dreadful) novels, between then and age 18. It wasn't until I was 19 that someone pointed out that I could be a massage therapist (there were such things?!). I still finished my English degree, but indeed have earned almost all of my living from massaging.

Sorry, no astronomy here.

Cool. There was a creek down behind the bank, across the street from my house, where I often played as a child, but it didn't have anything living in it, so I played at "fishing for rocks". It did, however, have a lot of blackberry brambles on its banks, which provided delicious berries in the summertime. That whole area was cleared out shortly after I left town to make way for senior housing.

When I was 15, I had a poem published in an anthology of Unitarian Universalist poets (you can find it on Amazon if you are curious). All but one of the rest of the contributers were adults; however, the one other young person, who was 14, had a paragraph written by the editors explaining how remarkable they thought it was that such a young person had such talent. Also, I was the only one whose name was left off of the back cover of the book!

When I was a little girl I was constantly writing little stories and poems. I had no concept of what it takes to write anything with merit, so I'd just write it as it popped into my head. I prefer mellow parties that make it possible for people to talk to each other to spectator sports parties where one is supposed to scream and shout but if one dares to have a conversation one is "spoiling the fun".
