Major accomplishment
Sep. 2nd, 2004 10:37 pmTonight I went to the gym. It's the first time I've set foot there in four months and the first time I've done more than yoga class in seven.
There was a brief moment of panic when they thought they had given away my locker and pitched all my stuff, but it turned out the computer was in error. Then I realized that I had forgotten to bring shorts, but fortunately the Burlington Coat Factory had black jersey boxers for $7.
I did half an hour on the treadmill--and realized why I prefer the mill to all the other cardio options: it sets the pace for me. On everything else I have to keep myself at it and I can zone out and just forget to go fast enough to keep my heart rate up. On the mill, I set it for four miles an hour, take out my book and try not to fall off. After that I did a simple round of 1x15s on the TechnoGym and found that my strength hasn't fallen off as much as I had feared. I tried it 10 lbs. down from my last strength-training session and that was pretty much fine.
I'd like to get back into yoga there, but of the five instructors, the only one I've never tried is on Friday mornings at 9 am. Anyone want to place bets on the likelihood of my being at the gym at 9 am? The others have all annoyed me in the past and the one who teaches at the most convenient time is the one who annoys me the most, sad to say. I really miss my former instructors--I had a run of two good ones at a convenient time.
But I went to the gym! Now I just have to try to get back in the habit.

Date: 2004-09-02 08:37 pm (UTC)Re yoga, I really miss the yoga instructor who used to come to FTP during lunch hour. That was another thing I did because it was scheduled. It was also pretty active - kind of a yoga-robics. I took another class later on, but that was yoga for middle-aged women. Ah well, another thing I could do on my own, but don't.

Date: 2004-09-02 10:02 pm (UTC)When I'm taking a yoga class I'm very good about getting there. As you say, it's a Scheduled Activity. Plus, I can tell myself honestly that I will feel better after I go. Unfortunately, the same is not true of working out--I don't feel especially worse, but the only thing that feels better is my virtue.

Date: 2004-09-03 09:31 am (UTC)Wednesday was my first official blown-off gym session (bought curtain fabric, took puppy to the reservoir, and went to see Verakai instead) since I started this project, and I'm trying hard to model it as a singular event rather than the first crack. Today I get back on the horse. Really.
And I'm impressed by your walking speed. I can hit 4 but I can't keep it up for very long. I like treadmills for many of the same reasons you do... don't need to pay attention to 'em... I start out at 3.5 and kick it up a couple of notches when I feel up to it and back down when I start sliding backward, with the goal of getting as close to 2 miles in half an hour as possible... what I'd really like is to set the distance to 2 miles and try to get my time down, but oh well.

Date: 2004-09-03 11:18 pm (UTC)I love the fact that there are so many interesting-looking classes, but my schedule pretty much guarantees that I'll almost never be able to make it to any of the ones that interest me. *sigh*
