Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic are in desperate need of readers who can handle books on math, physics, chemistry, medicine, biology and computer science. They are having to turn down requests from clients who need these books, which they really hate to do.

I've been a volunteer there for seven years now and if you enjoy reading and wouldn't mind a two-hour break once a week to think about something different, maybe review something in your field or pull out the skills from your old major, then this is an excellent opportunity for you. The people are extremely nice and the studio is conveniently located in the same building with the Porter Square Elephant Walk.

If you have any questions that I could answer from a volunteer perspective, I'd be happy to, but you're probably better off just calling the office. Which you should totally do.

I'm going to do it! I just keep missing the training day (which I think is Wednesday), which I'll probably have to miss again today with this weather. :-(

Yay! Getting started is the hardest part--after that you can choose your own hours (more or less) and it gets a lot easier to fit in.

Is the only training during the week? I don't think I can take time off to do that.... Too bad, as I would love to help out. (Working at a medical publisher for years should have its benefits, right?)

I believe there's an evening training session. They may also be able to make special arrangements if Wednesdays are simply impossible, but you really want to do to it.

Wish I could do that online.

Yeah, that would be awesome. They just switched from analog to digital around the time I started volunteering, so perhaps that's the next advance!

The Canadian National Institute for the Blind does a similar thing, converting books to audio. An acquaintance of mine used to read for them. Not sure if it was volunteer or paid. I could read physics books. :P

That turns out not to actually be so convenient for me. Do you know (or would you ask) whether they'll take remote readers? I do have some decent recording equipment.

I know they do have some remote readers. You'd probably be best off contacting the Palo Alto office (http://www.rfbd.org/western/volunteers.htm#paloalto) to see if that could be arranged.

I adored them the one time I volunteered, and sadly they don't have a branch out here in Ohio.

Hmmm, we may be coming to Boston for spring break. Maybe I'll treat myself to a two hour session!
