Just saw the extended version of The Two Towers.
It's interesting just how much better the extended versions have been than the theatrical cuts. It felt as though so much of the book that had to be cut to get it under the studio's limit was brought back here and made it so much richer. I was pleased that we got some mention of the Entwives--always one of my favorite bits, even if it does make me cry--though sorry that they played it for humor. Much more Merry & Pippin, which was great. I know it's an obvious casting, but I'm now dying to see Dom Monaghan's Puck. Someone in the car commented on what an odd choice it was to mutate Elrond from a wise father-figure to an overbearing father-in-law. Much more Faramir, in ways that made me like him much more than I had in the theatrical version--again, much more true to the book, in feeling if not in detail. And the additional bits of Eowyn really strengthened the sense of her love for Aragorn. More Gollum! More Fangorn! Oddly, it seemed as though a lot of the editing in the first hour was much choppier than I remembered--some very awkward cuts there. Overall, this is much closer to the movie I wanted to see.
