Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] mooomooo, [livejournal.com profile] jason237 and I saw a free screening of The Jacket tonight. It stars Adrian Brody and Keira Knightley, with Jennifer Jason Leigh and Kris Kristofferson in supporting roles. It was produced by George Clooney, Steven Soderburgh and Peter Gruber and has something of an "indie" feel to it.

We both enjoyed it, but I think it's going to have a lot of trouble finding an audience. The tag line is "Terror has a new name" which might make you think it's a horror movie, which it isn't. It's actually a fairly sweet "love conquers all" kind of thing, but to get to that you have to sit through scenes of war, gore, violence and mental anguish. It's got an interesting premise and the way it's laid out, very little is a surprise. It's not a question of "what's going to happen," but rather "how is that going to happen," which is probably why it reminded me just a little bit of Memento.

Keira does a creditable job with an American accent and plays the skank convincingly enough. Adrian Brody uses his odd combination of creepiness and innocence well here.

Definitely worth seeing for free, if it sounds at all interesting to you.
