Last night we had a wonderful dinner at Perlan.

Set on a hill overlooking the city, Perlan consists of six huge tanks (filled with geothermally heated water that supplies about half the demand of the city) in a circle, with a glass dome in the center. The lower sections of the dome house an exhibition and some retail space, while the top floor is a revolving restaurant. Sadly, the weather last night was not conducive to breathtaking views, but we could see the city fairly clearly and the atmosphere was still quite pleasant, reminding us somewhat of The People´s Palace in London.

The food was very good. After an amuse bouche of fois gras with a berry coulis, J. started with a wonderfully smoky lobster bisque with plenty of chunks of meat in it. My terrine of tuna and lobster with salmon roe was not quite as splendid, but still quite good. My main was much better--tenderloin of reindeer sliced over creamed cabbage with bacon, served with a crispy corn and tomato muffin (although they wanted to call it a "tower") and a bit of sauteed spinach. J.´s lamb was quite good, but slightly overcooked. When asked, our server said that it should have been medium rare--that´s the chef´s intention for it--but J. found it solidly in medium territory. For dessert we shared a small ginger & cardamom creme brulee that was less crunchy on top than J. would like, but had marvelous flavor and texture below. It was served with blood orange sorbet in a crisp shell and a perfectly ripe strawberry with chopped apple and canteloupe and one of the mystery fruits I can´t eat, but J. enjoys. With coffee and complimentary chocolates, it made for a very nice sampling of tastes, although having to serve ourselves demitasses of coffee from a large French press was a bit of a chore.

The bill felt a little shocking (almost 18,000 kr), but food here tends to be quite expensive and Perlan is definitely an 'occasion' kind of place. And having service included definitely eases the bite.

And now we´re off to explore the museums of Reykjavik and hope that the rain has passed, for now.
